Exploring Emotions Through a Biblical Lens

Hello Family,

As I have mentioned, Rare Byrds is a ministry, glory to the highest. This blog will encourage and build upon the Christian faith. Testimonies can change lives and plenty have saved lives, mine included.

That said, I am pleased to introduce a young lady who loves Jesus so much. When this young woman prays, you'll feel the trials and tribulations she's conquered and the faith that drives her through life. This beautiful young woman is my younger sister Ms. Chartez (Tezz) Thomas.

The Bible comprehensively explains human emotions, acknowledging the roles of emotion in our spiritual and relational lives. Scripture reveals that emotions are a God-given aspect of our humanity (James 3:9). Here are a few references to what the Bible says about various emotions:

1. Love- Love is the greatest virtue (1 Corinthians 13:13) and the essence of God’s nature.

2. Fear- Fear of the Lord is considered the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10).

3. Anger- God expresses righteous anger, showing that anger is not inherently sinful (Exodus 34:6-7).

4. Anxiety and Worry- The Bible addresses anxiety with reassurance, urging trust in God: “Do not be anxious about anything… but present your requests to God” (Philippians 4:6-7).

5. Peace- Peace is another fruit of the Spirit and is described as surpassing all understanding (Philippians 4:7).

6. Compassion- Compassion reflects God’s character: “The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love” (Psalm 145:8).

7. Hope- Hope is a central aspect of faith, grounded in God’s promises: “For I know the plans I have for you… plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11).

8. Jealousy and Envy- God’s jealousy reflects His deep desire for our undivided devotion (Exodus 20:5) it isn’t like mankind's jealousy.

The Bible does not dismiss emotions but encourages us to manage and express them in ways that honor God. Emotions can lead us closer to God when we submit them to Him and allow His Spirit to guide us.

We operate from the flesh, most times, as opposed to operating in the spirit. Oftentimes, when we are dealing with our emotions we make choices that drive us further away from Jesus.

When we don’t consult God in our matters we tend to make bad decisions. Why? We want instant gratification and that is why patience is a virtue and a fruit of the spirit. This is why we are told to lean not unto our understanding.
